AUSTRALIA: Jordan Anthony “We Will Rise”

You can currently count all of Australia’s Eurovision and Junior Eurovision entries on two hands – that’s one hand and five fingers per contest. And that was my roundabout way of saying holy heck, we’re at five apiece already (how did that happen?!?). We’ve done very well for ourselves in both competitions, with podium placements at JESC in both 2017 and 2018. That puts a fair bit of pressure on the 14-year-old shoulders of Jordan Anthony, our next representative and someone who can boast a few firsts even if he doesn’t fly home from Poland with a trophy in his baggage.

He’ll be the first boy to represent Australia at Junior; the first contestant in contest history to have competed on the adult version of The Voice as opposed to The Voice Kids before participation; and the first Aussie act to come from Perth/WA (which as a fellow West Australian, has me pretty excited). He’s far from the first artist to have co-written their song, but it’s always great to see these kids having a hand in their entries. Jordan’s We Will Rise was penned by himself plus production duo MSquared – a.k.a. Michael Delorenzis and Michael Paynter – who were also responsible for Jael’s Champion. You might also know Paynter from his own lengthy musical career that has included a stint on The Voice, supporting numerous Aussie and international artists on tour and releasing 2010’s Love The Fall featuring The Veronicas. Basically, this song has strong credentials. But has it got the goods to get us that long(ish) awaited victory in a Eurovision event?

I don’t think it will rise (title pun intended) quite that high, but I do think it’s another solid entry for us. I also think it has been underrated by Eurofans so far. No, it’s not groundbreaking or that creative, but the same could be said about many of the other entries for 2019. We Will Rise sticks to the formula of previous Australian entries My Girls, We Are and Champion in that it’s a pop ballad with inspirational (and at times, clichéd) lyrics about staying strong when you’re struggling and having faith in your support system, et cetera. It’s by-the-numbers, follows a predictable path and doesn’t take any risks. But you know what? I don’t mind at all. I legitimately love it. It gives me the same feelings Champion did last year, a massive sense of pride plus a shiver down my spine whenever I hear it. It sounds like a TV talent show winner’s single in the best sort of way, and flows smoothly from simple verse to promising pre-chorus, then on to the actual chorus which I think delivers the goods (yes, it’s repetitive, but that’s a hook in itself). And can we talk about that bridge? Hello there, glorious gospel-esque goodness! Like the rest of the song, that bridge lets Jordan show off the light and shade in his voice without We Will Rise turning into a three-minute vocal vehicle and nothing more. Knowing how incredible his live vocals are, I can’t wait to see him perform in Poland. That’s when I think a lot of fans might change their opinions about this song, since people often forget how much a live performance can elevate an entry. I really think that’s going to be the case with We Will Rise.

Here’s hoping for more interesting staging than Jael had in Minsk – the ‘singer on podium waving their arms around wildly’ concept worked for her and for Champion, but it would be great to mix things up this time. Some cool effects, a memorable prop, maybe a second or third person so the ‘we’ makes more sense than it did for We Got Love…anything, really. Well, anything except VR goggles and concealed costume ribbons that turn Jordan into a human maypole – that might be too familiar. Assuming we pull off a good performance or even a magical moment, there is potential for another great result here. I’m not anticipating a win, as I’ve said, because I don’t think our jury vote will be 2018-strong and we tend to be dragged down by the public vote. But every time I listen to this song, I’m convinced it will find an extra gear live and make it to the mid/lower top ten. I wouldn’t see that as a disappointment off the back of our consecutive 3rd places: I’d see it as a strong finish in a contest with a sizeable pack of contenders.

We Will Rise lyrics

You know that I’m around
To light you up in the dark
You can fight another round
No this won’t tear you apart

Don’t give up
We will not back down
We will stand up proud
Don’t lose heart
Even in the pain
You gotta try again

Rise
Higher and higher
Up from the fire
Rise
Out of the shadows
Into hope
Rise, rise, rise We will rise, rise, rise

I see you marching on
Your day has finally come
Lifting up that winner’s crown
You’re setting fire to the sun

Don’t give up
We will not back down
We will stand up proud
Don’t lose heart
Even in the pain
You gotta try again

Rise Higher and higher
Up from the fire
Rise
Out of the shadows
Into hope
Rise, rise, rise
We will rise, rise, rise

When the days are long
And the nights are cold
I will shine my light
We’ll be brave and bold
When the nights are cold
I’ll be by your side

Rise
Higher and higher
Up from the fire
Rise
Out of the shadows
Into hope
Rise, rise, rise
We will rise, rise, rise
