ITALY: Marta Viola “La Voce Della Terra (The Voice of the Earth)”

Italy has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 45 times since 1956. They took a few rests over the years (including the big one between 1997 and 2011) but have scored two wins: Gigliola Cinquetti with “Non ho l’eta” in 1964 and Toto Cutungo in 1990 with “Insieme: 1992”. They have also had five second places (Franca Raimondi’s “Aprite le finestre” and Tonina Torrielli’s “Amami se vuoi” in 1956, Gigliola returned in 1974 with “Si”, Raphael Gualazzi’s “Madness of Love” in 2011, and Mahmood’s “Soldi” this year) and five third places (Domenico Modugno with “Nel blu, dipinto di blu” in 1958, Emilio Pericoli’s “Uno per tutte” in 1963, Wess and Dori Ghezzi with “Era” in 1975, Umberto Tozzi and Raf with “Gentre di mare” in 1987, and Il Volo’s “Grande Amore” in 2015).

They have participated at Junior Eurovision since 2014 with a win on their first try with Vincenzo Cantiello’s “Tu primo grande amore”. They have also come third in 2016 with “Cara Mamma” by Fiamma Boccia. Out of their six entries, most of their songs have been a mix of Italian and English and this year’s “La voce della terra” by Marta Viola follows the same vein in a mix of the two languages.

Marta Viola is 10 and lives near Turin. Just like her parents, she enjoys music, singing and dancing, including modern dance and hip hop. Her favourite singer is Beyonce and loves making short videos for Tik Tok.

The song is written by a team of Marco Iardella, Franco (Frank) Fasano, Emilio di Stefano and Fabrizio Palaferri. Marco has written two other Junior Eurovision songs, the before mentioned “Cara Mamma” in 2016, and “Scelgo” by Iside Flore which came 11th in 2017. Frank has appeared at San Remo during the 1980s and is a children’s song composer and Fabrizio also contributed to “Scelgo” and “What is Love” in 2018 by Melissa and Marco which finished 7th.

“La voce della terra” translates to “The voice or the earth” and this song is about coming together to save the planet, a home we all share. It’s also about the fragility of life and how we should take steps to protect it.

The song is carried by Marta’s sweet and soulful vocals. The chorus has a catchy and repetitive hook, and the mix of Italian and English is done flawlessly. The challenge is now to get “Sempre!” out of your head!

Lyrics of “La Voce Della Terra (The Voice of the Earth)”

Italian lyrics:

C’è
In ogni cosa c'è
E parla un po' di sé
Nel volo di una foglia
C'è In ogni cosa è
È il mondo intorno a me

Farsi aurora boreale
A Capo Nord
Now
The voice of the earth
Is calling for your help
In every wave of the ocean
Listen
Wake up, it’s not a dream
We can become a team
To heal and save the planet
C’è la voce della terra
Quando viene sera
Su questa grande casa
Che ha per tetto il cielo

Sempre sempre
Sempre sempre
Sempre sempre
Sempre sempre

Nell'azzurro di tranquille maree
Tu puoi sentirla sempresempre
E per sempre se vuoi
Quella voce ancora ti racconterà
Della vita e della sua fragilità
Di ogni vita che una sola voce... ha
Sempre sempre sempre
The voice of the earth

Sempre sempre sempre
The voice of the earth

English translation:

You will find
Her
In every single thing telling about herself
In the flying of a leaf
You will find
Her
It is every little thing It is the world around me
What a great wonder
You will find the voice of the
Earth
Hidden there In a seed looking forward to the spring

Forever and ever
Forever and ever
Forever and ever
Forever and ever

In the blue colour of calm tides
You can hear it forever and ever
And in a flashlight she can turn into winter
Light at Cape North
Now
The voice of the Earth Is calling for your help
In every wave of the ocean
Listen
Wake up, it’s not a dream
We can become a team
To heal and save the planet
You will find
The voice of the Earth
When the night falls
Over this immense home
Whose roof is the
Sky

Forever and ever
Forever and ever
Forever and ever
Forever and ever

In the blue colour of peaceful tides
You can hear it forever and ever
And forever, if you want
That voice will tell you again and again of life and its fragility; of every single living being, that has got only one voice.

Forever and ever
The voice of the Earth
Forever and ever
The voice of the Earth
