Serbia holds the title of being the first country to have the same representative do both Junior Eurovision and Eurovision Song Contests. Nevena Bozovic represented Serbia in Junior Eurovision in 2007 with “Pisi mi” coming 3rd. She then crossed over into the senior competition with the group Moje 3 in 2013, who came 11th in the semi final on 46 points with “Ljubav je svuda”. Nevena then returned to Eurovision as a soloist this year in Tel Aviv with “Kruna”, placing 18th in the final. She paved the way for other artists like the Tolmachevy Sisters (Russia JESC winners in 2006 and ESC 2014), and OG3NE (Netherlands JESC as Lisa, Amy and Shelley in 2007 and ESC 2017), just to name a few!

The country first performed at Junior Eurovision as part of Serbia and Montenegro in 2006 and as a singular country the next year. As well as a third place finish in 2007, Serbia equaled that with another third placing in 2010 with Sonja Skoric and “Carobna noc”. They took a break between 2011 and 2014, and since then, their best result has been 7th in 2015, and a last placing in 2016.

Majority of Serbia’s entries have been in native tongue but this year, “Podigni glas (Raise Your Voice)“ is a mix of Serbian and English.

Flying the flag for the country this year is Darija Vracevic who just turned 12 in October. Not only is she a straight A student, she also attends music school and plays the piano. Darija has been singing, dancing and acting for a lot of her young life, even doing voice over dubbing for Disney/Pixar, Nickelodeon and Paramount productions, and she’s also won dance competitions. She’s very much looking forward to meeting the other artists in Poland and performing her song.

"Podigni glas" is about the catastrophes the planet is facing. It is written by a team of collaborators, with Darija having a say in her song. The rest of the writing team includes Aleksandra Milutinovic (who helped wrote the Bosnia and Herzegovina ESC 2007 song “Rijeka bez imema“ by Marija Sestic that came 11th), Leontina Vukomanovic (who also wrote Serbia and Montenegro’s “Lane moje“ in ESC 2004 for Zeljko Joksmovic which came 2nd), and Aleksandar Sablic, (who has been very busy writing for a lot of Serbian artists over the years).

The song has a contemporary feel with rock beat and guitars throughout. Her voice is earnest and powerful, as her message is important. We switch from Serbian to English towards the end of the song. There’s no dramatic key change but her voice gets stronger and stronger, and then the song ends abruptly, like an exclamation mark on a statement: there is no “planet B!"

Lyrics of Podigni glas

Serbian:

Podigni glas

Od samog prvog daha,
svi smo mi ovde gosti,
na vazduhu i vodi
planeta život rodi
otkud glad i rat, pogodi.

Ona je ovde bila
otkad postoji vreme,
ali pod ovom vatrom
njene su usne neme
sat otkucava poslednji čas!

Podigni glas, u ime nas
koji zajedno budućnost živimo
podigni glas, uradi to
jer sutra već sve biće prekasno.

(Raise your voice and make a choice).

Da li si čuo vetar
i tužnu pesmu mora,
video kako gori
hiljadu zelengora
svet pred očima nestaće nam.

Podigni glas, u ime nas
koji zajedno budućnost živimo
podigni glas, uradi to
jer sutra već sve biće prekasno

Zemlja je jedini dom za sve nas…
Podigni glas…

Now raise your voice
and make a choice
Earth is hurting now
and that’s our only home

Now raise your voice
and make some noise
time is running out
the future can not hold.

Podigni glas, uradi to,
jer sutra već!

English:

Raise your voice

From the very first breath
We are all guests on this planet,
From air and water
She yielded life
So, where do the hunger and wars come from? Guess!

She' s been here
from the beginning of time
But under this fire her lips are sealed
The clock is ticking its final
hour

Raise your voice, for all of us,
Who are living the future together,
Raise your voice, do it,
Because tomorrow might be too late.

(Raise your voice and make a choice)

Do you hear the wind,
the sorrowful song of the sea?
Have you seen eternal forests
go up in flames?
World is disappearing before our eyes.

Raise your voice, for all of us,
Who are living the future together,
Raise your voice, do it,
Because tomorrow is going to be too late.

Earth is the only home we have.…
Raise your voice!

Now raise your voice
and make a choice
Earth is hurting now
and that’s our only home

Now raise your voice
and make some noise
time is running out
the future can not hold.

Raise your voice, do it,
Because tomorrow...
