Friend of a Friend is a tune by the infectiously energetic Lake Malawi, a 3 piece band who spend their time between Prague and London. They’ve been together since 2013, and convincingly took out the Czech national final in January, which was conducted entirely virtually! Lead singer Albert Černý’s tone is reminiscent of bands like Vampire Weekend and British India, and wouldn’t sound out of place on a festival lineup. His strong, yet very genre appropriate accent is a nice throwback to artists such as Lena Meyer-Landrut and Gianluca Bezzina, stylistic choices that have proven successful on the Eurovision stage in the past.
The song combines the kind of strong indie pop you’d expect from such an outfit, with some delightful 80s synth elements. One of the perks of releasing their song early is that Lake Malawi have the chance to play the Eurovision circuit, and as we saw during the Ukrainian national final, the boys can definitely perform live – they even had 2016 winner Jamala on her feet and bopping along!
Can the Czech Republic make it to the final for a 3rd time, or better still, achieve their nation’s best ever result?
