Junior Eurovision 2021 Review - Italy: Elisabetta Lizza Specchio (Mirror On The Wall)

The Artist

Italy’s representative this year is Elisabetta Lizza.

Elisabetta is from Ardo and is a singer, dancer and a pianist. She has spent the last three years performing in musicals and entering local competitions.

Among her favourite artists is none other than 2021 Eurovision champion Måneskin, so will she follow in their footsteps and claim Italy’s second Eurovision title of the year?

The Song

Specchio (Mirror On The Wall) is a rock song (we sense a theme here, Italy) about rebelling against societal pressures, and living who you want without fear of prejudice. The song is mostly in Italian, with a tiny bit of English.

Specchio is written by Fabrizio Palaferri (worked with children’s choir Piccolo Coro Dell'Antoniano) and Stefano Rigamonti (wrote the Italian JESC entry Scelgo (My Choice) by Maria Iside Fiore in 2017 that came 11th).

The song is currently available on our YouTube and Spotify playlist.

Italy at JESC

2021 will be Italy’s 7th participation in Junior Eurovision since their debut in 2014. 2014 was a great year for them as they won on their first go with Vincenzo Cantiello and Tu primo grande amore.

The country did not participate last year due to the pandemic.

Wow Italy have come back with a bang! Maybe Måneskin’s success played a part here in the choice of genre, but I’m not complaining either way. I am a huge fan of this, and I would argue this is even better that Zitti I Buoni, because it’s not as hardcore rock and therefore has wider appeal.

JESC really is time travelling this year! This is probably the most 90s rock song I've ever heard! If Elisabetta pulls this off live it's a serious contender for the win!

Oh… Ohhhh… OH! Italy. What are you doing to my rock music heart?! I’m definitely a fan. This has a little mid 90s feel to it too which is great.

Even though Italy was one of our last reveals, it was certainly a big reveal. Elisabetta’s song Specchio has a deep meaning surrounded by a rock-pop-ballad of a song. It is impactful, unique and contemporary. It is hard not to see that this song has been inspired by Måneskin’s recent success. Another potential winner in my eyes.

It has a great meaning in such a good song as well! It’s quite unique and I like the 90’s feel! It seems like this choice of music is because of the rise of this type of music such as Måneskin! I’m not saying it’s bad, it’s really good!

Average Score: 9
