Junior Eurovision 2021 Review - Azerbaijan: Sona Azizova One Of Those Days

The Artist

Sona Azizova is 12 years old from Baku, and was internally selected to represent Azerbaijan this year in Paris.

She has lived in Romania and Serbia and has taken part in local singing festivals while there. She has also competed on the first season of The Voice Kids Azerbaijan where she finished second.

Sona is not only a singer, but a gymnast and a keen artist - working mostly with copper and has her metalworks on display in her hometown.

The Song

One Of Those Days is an uplifting “ballad with a beat” about brushing the bad days off and getting on with it as we are all worth it. The song is in a mix of English and Azerbaijani and really showcases Sona’s big vocals.

One Of Those Days was written by Maria Broberg (Swedish singer/songwriter), Fransisco Faria, Martin Wiik (also from Sweden), Hampus Eurenius (you guessed it - Swedish!), Javid Shahbazbayov, and Sona.

The song is currently available on our YouTube and Spotify playlists.

Azerbaijan at JESC

2021 will be the 4th time we see Azerbaijan at Junior Eurovision after their debut in 2012 and their last participation was in 2018. Their best result so far has been in 2013 with a 7th place thanks to Rustam Karimov’s Me and My Guitar

This type of song is not normally my cup of tea, and unfortunately for Azerbaijan that trend continues. I love Sona’s voice, but this is just not my kind of song.

Now I'm not usually a fan of ballads but this is very pretty! Sona's voice is incredible too, very hard to believe she's only 12. Definitely not my favourite but it's still very good!

Excuse me, how is Sona 12 with that voice? This is a big ballad with a big vocal and it is completely Smooth FM style radio friendly. Seamlessly mixes English and Azerbaijani and is a really great way to spend 3 minutes. Official video is a B&W blank canvas, but I doubt staging will make or break this - it’s a top song as is.

It is a lovely mid-tempo song, sung by the very talented Sona. She has a mature and powerful voice. The music video is pretty bland, most likely to focus on the song. Sona is very expressive and emotive. I feel this will do well as a live performance. This song doesn’t wow me, but I still appreciate that it is good quality.

Raquel: 6/10 ✭✭✭✭✭✭✩✩✩✩

Sona has a very powerful voice which is amazing for the fact that she’s 12! The M/V Doesn’t really have much but the song is good! I’m not a big fan but it’s fine.

Average Score: 6.2
